Notes for Hunters: This will be a typical T-Hunt However, this will not be a solo hunt or a competitive hunt. This will be a Group Hunt in which all of the hunters who participate are expected to work together as a team to triangulate on the source of the radio signal and share information over a local repeater. This Group Hunt will give you the practice and experience you need to assist a team in locating the source of harmful or illegal radio interference, if you are ever called upon to do so. The group’s Team Captain will meet everyone at the Pro Bass parking lot at 9:45 am to give them instructions. He will coordinate the team’s hunt strategy and incorporate each participant into the hunt. Before the hunt begins, the team will choose a local repeater which all of the participants are able to access. It will be their Talk Frequency. The hidden transmitter will be an unmanned mobile radio automatically transmitting at 35 watts from within a parked automobile. At 10:00 am the hidden transmitter will begin transmitting. Since this event is not a competition, but instead a Group Hunt, there will be no need for anyone to rush off in pursuit of the transmitter. Instead, each member of the group will use their radio direction finding equipment to attempt to pick up the transmitter signal from their location at the Pro Bass parking lot. If they obtain a signal they will take a bearing on the direction of its strongest signal. Each person who obtains a bearing will note its direction to the best of their ability. For this purpose a Compass (handheld or cell phone app) and a Map (paper or cell phone app) are recommended. A Rankin County Map would be useful, a Mississippi DeLorme Map would be useful, a photo copy or map printed out from a computer and placed on a clip board would be useful for drawing bearing on. For folks who are used to using cell phone apps, the SigTrax phone app is a highly recommended RDF tool. It can take multiple bearings and record their triangulation lines on its built in map, greatly simplifying the map and compass process. The Team Captain will draw on his map everyone’s bearings. Using the information he and team members gained, the Team Captain will deploy each member to a different location where they will park, search for the transmitter signal, and if heard take a new bearing on it, then relay the new information to the Team Captain over the Talk Frequency. The Team Captain will then draw on his map everyone’s new bearings. If each member was deployed far enough apart at right angles to each other, their bearings will form a nice triangle pattern where they cross on the map. The hidden transmitter will be located somewhere within the triangle. The Team Captain will then deploy each member to another location closer to the triangle and this process will continue until the team converges on the location of the hidden transmitter. If the hiding location is determined to be a parking lot full of cars, any members who arrive first on the scene will wait until all of the team members have arrived, then they will all hunt together as a team on foot a short distance to locate the vehicle the transmitter is inside of. The transmitter QR code will be taped to the passenger window. Hunters must scan the QR code with their cell phone to end their hunt and have the Hunt Manager website auto-calculate their hunting time, mileage (write your ending odometer reading down before getting out of your car), statistics and awards. After the event, hunters are encouraged to eat lunch together at a local restaurant, where they can discuss their hunting experiences. Participants are encouraged to upload a hunt photo when they log the find. Statistics and the online Hunt Log will be viewable on the Hunt Manager website after the event ends.
